The chieftaincy © Sylvain Saustier
The traditional chief still occupies a fundamental place in the life of the ethnic groups. He is the guarantor of customary, religious, and spiritual authority. Today you can still find a good number of territories under the authority of customary chiefs, the chieftaincies, located mostly in the western area, around Bamenda and Foumban. Amongst the most interesting are those of Bandjoun, Bangwa and Bafut. The traditional villages are in the north of the country, in the region of the Mandara mountains.
