You must not miss the Mandara Mountains region in the north. You will find quite a disconcerting landscape of lunar peaks there at more than 1,500 m. Leaving from Mokolo and Maroua, agencies organise hiking tours for several days. Not far from there, the village of Maba offers an impressive view of the plains of neighbouring Nigeria. The region of the Kapsiki and Rumsiki hills has crops on terraces on the mountainsides. This is also a good base for excursions into the surrounding areas.
