20,000 BC, the first Asian nomads reached Canada via the Bering Strait.
In 1534, Jacques Cartier, a French sailor, took possession of the land in the name of Francis I, on his first expedition. The following year he sailed back up the Saint Lawrence river, and gave Canada its name, a Huron-Iroquois word meaning village, or community.
In 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded the city of Quebec, and explored the river courses leading into the centre of the continent. Champlain became the real creator of Canada.
En 1663, New France officially became a French province.
In 1759, the British took possession of Quebec.
In 1763, the French king officially ceded Quebec to the British, home to 60,000 French settlers.
In 1837, the French rebellion was overthrown by the British.
In 1840, Lower Canada was dissolved.
In 1867, the Canadian confederation was created, with four provinces.
In 1926, Canada became independent of the Commonwealth.
In 1960, the Liberal Party wins the elections, marking the beginning of the Quiet Revolution.
In 1970, the Quebec Liberation Front, a terrorist group, kidnaps a British diplomat and a minister from Quebec. A serious political crisis is unleashed. The minister is found dead.
In 1980, the people from Quebec vote "no" to the referendum on Quebec's independence.
In 1992, the Canadians again reject a proposal to reform the Constitution.
In 1995, 50.6% of the inhabitants of Quebec say "no" to a referendum on the sovereignty of Quebec.
In 1999, Nunavut, a new state, is created. This is the territory of the Inuit.
