Montreal The economic centre of the Quebec region, Montreal is Canada's second biggest city (after Toronto). © Igor Lubinetsky
Montreal does not need to bear the title of capital to demonstrate its importance in the province. The second largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris, Montreal continues to be the main city in Quebec, both for its number of inhabitants and for its economic activity. The gigantic buildings and traffic jams in the city centre bear witness to this. However, the famous city of Quebec has known how to retain a lot of charm, and old districts continue to live nonchalantly, in the image of their inhabitants. Located on an island surrounded on the one side by the Saint Lawrence, and on the other the river of the northern prairies, the city is divided into two by the Saint Lawrence street. The Old Montreal district, although dispersed, has managed to retain an almost provincial charm, with its old houses, red brick buildings and Victorian cornices, and the Chateau Ramezay, the former residence of an 18th century governor. The city has more than twenty museums, including the unmissable museums of decorative arts, the Museum of Archaeology and History, and the Pointe à Callière Museum.
