Successively a fur-trading post, then an industrial town, Trois-Rivières has now become, because of its location in the heart of a forest zone, Quebec's major pulp and paper-making centre. Located half-way between Quebec City and Montreal, on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, the city is located on the border of two regions: Central Quebec in the south and Mauricie in the north, with the region of Lanaudière on the western side. Central Quebec (the region is called Centre-du-Québec), has a hilly landscape, indicating the beginning of the Appalachians and it is an agricultural zone, with cranberries as its main production. As fo Mauricie, it is the opportunity for a trip into the heart of unspoilt nature, amidst rivers, lakes and forests, ideal for lovers of wide open spaces - a favourite among fishermen and hunters.

Visit Trois-Rivières and its surroundings

• To see

  The Neo-Gothic style cathedral, Niverville and Tonnancour manors and the Ursulines' monastery in the old town of Trois-Rivières. The Quebec Museum of Folk Culture. From the end of December to the end of February, the Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade River gets covered with hundreds of little cabins with a hole in the ground for fishing.

  To do

  Visit the exhibition centre on the pulp and paper industry.
  Go dog sledding or for a snowmobile ride in the Mauricie National Park in the winter and the summer, you can go along the numerous pathways, on horseback or on a bike, and end your ride at one of the many lakes where you can have a nice swim.
  Visit one of the many sugar shacks, active from the end of March to the beginning of June.
  In Neuville, walk along the charming Erables street.
  Go fishing 'à la fascine' on the quay of Portneuf, a pretty and typical little town located at the mouth of the river which goes by the same name.

  To think about

  Pack very warm clothing in the winter and very light clothing in the summer... This is no revelation but when it is cold in Quebec, temperatures can drop to 40°C below zero, even 50°C below zero, whereas in the summer, it is very hot (35°C).

• To avoid

  Avoid walking on frozen lakes from the end of March onwards, the ice isn't quite thick enough to support your weight and the water is freezing cold... Beware, in any case, of holes made for fishing, some lakes have more than a hundred.

  Maple syrup for breakfast on pancakes or served with meat, trout prepared in many ways, soup which is served with every meal, onion soup, served with more cheese than soup and many other dishes based on cranberries.

  To bring back

  Maple syrup bought from a sugar shack, rabbit, wild boar terrine and others made with different types of game meat, often flavoured with cranberries. If you are sensitive to the cold, you can buy a fur hat for a reasonable price.
