Island of Boa Vista, Cape Verde

The third largest island, Boavista is named the "island of dunes". Many sandy beaches dot the area along the island and no trace of pollution isvisible. The impressively flat topography and the many dunes shaped by the wind recall the Sahara. The vegetation consists of palm and coconut trees. Date trees also grow here, and are harvested from November to December. The region of Ribeira de Rabil is well cultivated. The beaches to the south of the island are more beautiful and less dangerous than those to the north. The wind is an advantage for Boavista as fans of windsurfing come to train here. Even though the islanders live off tourism today, they also live on fishing and livestock farming. Normally people come to Boavista to relax and enjoy the sea, revel in the silence and the many beaches.

pros

  •  Wide and beautiful sandy beaches
  •  Strong wind, ideal for windsurfing

cons

  •  The lack of activities and facilities for tourists who need to be 'entertained'

Visit Island of Boa Vista

  • To see

Many sandy beaches dot the area along the island and no trace of pollution is visible yet. The impressively flat topography and the many dunes shaped by the wind recall the Sahara. For wannabe treasure hunters, a wreck is also visible along the coast north of the island. The wreckage of Cabo de Santa Maria is that of a Spanish vessel taken aground on 1 September 1968.

    To do

Firstly, for those interested in birds, the island of Curral Velho, accessible by boat, hosts the dwellings of albatross, frigate birds, black and large-scale tropical birds. You can also visit the village of Povoaçao Velha, the oldest village on the island dating back to the XVII century. Also see the flagship of Morro Negro, located east of the island.

    To think about

As for swimming, beware of the strong sea currents, which are the cause of many drowning incidents.
  • To avoid

Avoid drinking tap water and having ice in your drinks.

    To try

The national dish, caechupa, is like a cassoulet, and is based on corn, bacon, and chorizo. Fish, chicken, pork, rice and some vegetables are the basic constituents of local cuisine. You can also find excellent grilled lobster and crayfish. Typical of the archipelago, Grogue is a white or brown rum served like a punch.

    To bring back

The crafts industry is not very diverse, and is mainly limited to crochet tablecloths, table mats, bedspreads, etc. Paintings, batik, straw hats and objects made from sea shells can also be brought back as souvenirs. Also bring back some grogue and Fogo wine.
