The cultural capital of the country and port of arrival for imported goods, Mindelo, on Sao Vicente, is the most lively town in the country, particularly on week-ends. The beautiful pastel colours of the houses and the Portuguese colonial style architecture are located on avenue Marginal, towards the church, in the market district. They can also be found around the Governor's Palace or on Amilcar Cabral square, a place for youthful encounters and for meeting people in general, which is a pleasant area for a stroll at the end of an afternoon. Various frescoes illustrating the ethical ideology of the country cover the walls of the city that gave birth to Cesaria Evora, the 'bare-footed singer'. Do not miss the market's pretty wooden halls.
