Santiago "the African" is the most populated island, and the one that holds all the characteristics of the Cape Verde in its scenery and population. However, not many interesting sites can be found there, apart from Cidade Velha (the old town, which marks the first settlement of the Portuguese colonialists), a few miles away from Praia; the beach of Tarrafal, in the north; and the town of Assomada, in the centre (best to visit on market days). It is not worth lingering in Praia, the capital (the only interesting area being the historical centre, located on the plateau). You can, however, make the most of a stay in Praia to discover the numerous facets of Cape Verdean music in the numerous bars and nightclubs.
