Terrestrial wildlife

Terrestrial wildlife A child and his donkey The wildlife in Cape Verde is mainly composed of domestic animals © Bertrand Levet

The fauna on Cape Verde is not particularly original and diverse. You can see donkeys, horses, dogs and cats there, and also live stock: sheep, goats, chickens, pigs and rabbits. There are no ferocious or dangerous animals.
Since October 2004, some islands have seen migratory locusts from western Africa which have caused concern on the islands of Sal, Santiago, Maio and Boavista; however, the most affected are Sao ntao and Fogo. In October 2004, 200 hectares of crops were effected.
