Located north of Honga Roa, Ahu Akivi is the only platform whose statues are turned towards the Pacific Ocean. According to the tradition, they represent seven emissaries sent on an expedition by Hotu Matu'a, who was to become the island's first king. And so, the moais look in the direction of the Marquesas Islands and the missing, small island of Hiva, from where the population of Rapa Nui are said to have originated.
