14 miles long and seven and a half miles wide, the island is a land swept by the wind, which prevents vegetation from growing, despite the soil being fertile. Its relief forms a succession of hills bounded here and there by small walls made of black stones. Its coasts are mainly bordered by steep cliffs; Easter Island's scenery is far from the stereotypical image of the Pacific Islands.
