In the southwest, the imposing Rano Kau volcano (a mile across and 984 ft deep) marks the entrance of Orongo National Park; the crater is an interlacing of land carpeted with gorses and glistening water. Banana trees, avocado trees and sugar cane plants grow on the mountainsides. At the top, right on the mountain slope, you will find the old ceremonial village of Orongo.
