 Climate and Seasons

The best season to visit varies, depending on the region being visited. April and May are the most favourable months for discovering central Tibet, and summer and autumn are good for trekking in the mountains. The Lhasa plain is relatively protected from the wind by the Himalayan chain, and there is not much snow, even in winter. In the northern part it is cold and dry, with a lot of sunshine, and strong radiation. The air is thin. On arrival at Tibet, the traveller should try to act slowly, rest as much as possible, and drink a lot of water. As a general rule, the nights are very cool, even freezing.
From June to September, the rainy season, the countryside is particularly green, however, rainfall can provoke mudslides and block the traffic.
The national tourism administration recommends a useful telephone number for weather forecasts: 6314111.
