Hangzhou, province of Zhejiang. 3 hours by train (120 miles) south-west of Shanghai, Hangzhou is considered the "tourist capital of China", so is very commercial, and young people go there in their thousands for their honeymoon. The West Lake has dikes, bridges, and small shaded islands, and is bordered by green hills hiding temples, pagodas, and tea houses. You should try the famous green tea there, longjing. Hangzhou is mostly worth visiting for the beauty of the site, walks in the hills (preferably at dawn or dusk), a visit to the Museums of Tea, Traditional Medicine, and the Mosque with Chinese architecture, one of the most beautiful in China. The evening market is amusing. To stay in Hangzhou for one or two nights, it is better to choose the west bank, which is less crowded.
