The small town of Xiahe (9,840 feet high) is 9 hours by bus from Lanzhou, via Linxia, and is famous for Labrang Tibetan monastery, which is as important as that of Sera or Drepung, near Lhasa. This is a rather world apart though and not quite as grand as Sera or Drepung, with important festivities organised by the some 1,200 monks who live there again, after the atrocities of the Cultural Revolution. Not necessarily a very nice celebration, these lamas (Buddhist monks) drive around in 4x4s as if they were freely accepted by the Chinese authorities, who are anxious to prove their good relationship with the Tibetans to the world.
