  • Lanzhou

The Silk Road has to pass through Lanzhou, the capital of the province of Gansu. Nicknamed the 'Orchid City', this fully modernised city has lost its old charm but offers some interesting sites, such as the White Pagoda Park, with its beautiful view over the city and the Yellow River. There is a 600 year old sanctuary on the hill of the Five Springs Park. You can admire a 16 ft tall bronze Buddha there.
