The province of Shaanxi is one of the oldest inhabited regions of China. Its fertile valleys and loess cliffs, a yellow-coloured silt, actually attracted the first inhabitants almost a million years ago. Hollowed out from the relief, some troglodytic houses are still inhabited today. The region is also rich in archaeological sites. Around Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi, no less than 167 necropolises have been classified, including the extraordinary Emperor Qin's terracotta army.
