Guilin is a departure point to go and meet the ethnic groups of Guangxi and Guizhou. Amongst the Zhuang (who make up more than a third of Guangxi's population), you can go and meet the Yao, of which some groups wear headdresses topped with silver and held by orange braids on holidays. 87 miles from Giulin, Jinxiu is in the centre of a district that is interesting to visit on local buses. However, you should be aware that accommodation is quite basic there. Further away, so obviously less visited, the "minority nationalities" of the neighbouring province, Guizhou, are fascinating. Buyi, Shui, Yi, Miao, and Hui... each one is divided into sub-groups that are difficult to memorise.
