The Guilin Sugarloaves Boat excursions offer enchanting views as you sail past the "sugarloaf" mountains overlooking the Li river. Panorama Media / age fotostock
Leaving from the town of Guilin, short cruises offer a magical spectacle along the karstic mountains that are like "sugarloaves" along the Li River. Guilin is only relatively interesting, as opposed to what the innumerable recently built luxury hotels would have you believe. There are not many places to visit, apart from organised parks (the Seven Star Hill Park evokes the Great Bear), the Hill in the shape of an elephant's trunk, the Reed Flute grotto, 4 miles from the town centre, and Mount Yao (go up in a cable car for a panoramic view). Every evening there is an antiques market on a quay along the river, where you can hunt for copies of Buddhist statues, embroidered tablecloths, and various pretty ethnic items in wood or horn, at prices you have to bargain for. At night, the main attraction is a cormorant fishing spectacle from a bamboo boat equipped with a lantern. This spectacle is organised exclusively for several boats loaded with tourists at the same time.
