The Imperial City of Xi'an A mosque designed in the style of a Chinese temple. IMAGEMORE / age fotostock
The eastern departure point for the Silk Road, the imperial city of Xi'an is a top place for Chinese culture, as shown by the famous terracotta army of 6,000 soldiers and horses buried 2,000 years ago and discovered intact in 1974. This site (the tomb of the emperor who unified China) is 22 miles from the city, a prestigious capital of the Middle Empire for more than a thousand years, and surrounded by a 9-mile wall, in very good condition. The provincial museum of Shaanxi should also be visited, as it is one of the richest in China, together with the mosque that looks like a Chinese temple (like that of Beijing).
