  • North Sea Park, Beihai
  • Somewhere to relax

Previously an imperial garden under the Liao, the Jin, the Yuan, the Ming and the Qing, today this park is still one of the most beautiful sites in Beijing. It occupies 170 acres to the north-east of the Imperial Palace, and its lake extends over more than half its land. The main entrance goes on to the Round City (Tuancheng), which marked the centre of the Mongolian capital. Sprinkled with pavilions, temples and monuments, this park is mostly a place for living in and relaxing; the Beijingese picnic there in summer and skate over the frozen lake in winter. The Bridge of Eternal Tranquility that is over six centuries old and joins Hortensia Island, the Pavilion that receives the light and its Buddha in white jade set with precious stones, and the wall of nine dragons built in 1417 as protection against bad spirits, are several reasons for strolling around there and losing yourself at leisure.
