Nestling in the hills one hour from the city-centre, this old hunting reserve transformed into a landscaped park of 400 acres offers an exceptional panorama. From the top of the 1,800-foot Xiangshan peak, accessible in a cable car for 30 yuans (allow an hour to reach to the top), you can admire the Temple of Azure Clouds in turn with the fountain of Jade, the lake and summer palace, to the skyscrapers of Beijing. Below, the botanical garden crosses the road going to the temple of the Sleeping Buddha (Wofosi). Famous for its bronze lacquered 16-foot Sleeping Buddha, this temple was built under the Tang. In autumn, the spectacle of the red sycamore leaves is worth the detour.
