In the search for a summer residence, the Dowager Empress, Cixi, restored an old palace some thirteen miles from Beijing at considerable cost. It also consists of the Kunming Lake, with the bridge with seventeen arches, the Millenary Longevity Hill (Wanshoushan), the Marble Boat (Qiuyangfang) and long galleries decorated with fine paintings. This is a wonderful place, and very appreciated by families at the weekend for a long outing and a picnic on a boat. Municipal buses and minibuses provide a good service.
