The Beijing Zoo, with an area of 125 acres, is the largest park of its category in the country. Located in an old imperial garden of the Ming, sprinkled with water courses, it became the Garden of the Ten Thousand Creatures (Wanshouyuan) when the Empress Cixi introduced 700 animals from Germany there at the beginning of the last century. Open to the public in 1908, it has more than 500 species, or 6,000 animals, including a few rare specimens from different areas of China: Tibetan yaks, tigers, bears, sea turtles and large birds of prey, without forgetting the giant panda. This park also offers lovely walks and information on the geography and the names of the animals in Chinese. The only downside is that the animals are sometimes living under rather depressing conditions.
