Three hours and forty five minutes from Lanzhou by train, stop in Zhangye for an excursion in the Qilian Mountains and visit Jiayuguan, the most western stronghold of the Middle Empire constructed in 1372, and the extreme western point of the Great Wall. All is in perfect condition. At 5,805 feet high, the fortress and its museum (very touristic) recount the defence system during the reign of the Ming dynasty.
