1960: this old French colony becomes independent. Father Fulbert Youlou becomes the first President.
1963: Alphonse Massamba-Débat is brought to power by the "Trois Glorieuses" Congo Revolution.
1968: Overthrow of the government by Commander Marien Ngouabi, who establishes the People's Republic of the Congo with a Marxist-Leninist Party, the Congolese Labour Party (PCT).
1977: General Joachim Yhombi-Opango comes to power after the assassination of President Ngouabi.
1979: Deposition of Yhombi-Opango by Denis Sassou Nguesso.
1990: Introduction of multi-party democracy
1992: Defeat of Nguesso and election of Pascal Lissouba to the head of State.
1993: Dissent over the results of the legislative elections and armed confrontations between the militia from the opposition parties and the presidential majority that result in 2,000 dead.
1997: New civil war leading to between 4,000 and 10,000 dead, and the overthrow of President Lissouba by General Sassou Nguesso. The latter proclaims himself Head of State and establishes a transition period of 3 years.
1998-1999: New phase of conflict. Cease-fire agreements are signed between the army and the main heads of the militia.
2001: Project for a new constitution, adopted by the provisional government, for a Presidential regime granting considerable power to the Head of State.
2002: New constitution abolishing the position of Prime Minister and reinforcing the powers of the President of the Republic.
Octobre 2005: armed incidents in Brazzaville.
