Congolese art, which is very rich, has been famous since the time of the first European trading posts. The Congolese masks, with abstract polychromatic designs, inspired the creators of modern art in Europe (Braque, Picasso). The Bakongo statuettes, pierced with nails, send bad spirits away with the mirror they wear on their stomachs. In the last century, ivory was carved into the forms of sceptres, elephant trunks and statuettes.
