Dubrovnik and its region, Croatia

The major asset of a stay in a seaside resort near Dubrovnik is, of course, the proximity of the old city, an architectural wonder, which is easily toured on foot. Lovers of festivals should not miss the theatre and musical festival which is has been held here since 1950 from 10th July to 25th August, both on the streets and in the churches, as well as in the palaces of the city.
Seaside hotels in the surroundings of Dubrovnik are located in the Bay of Lapad, 2.5 miles north of the old city, or in the hotel zone, five minutes walk away from the city. The hotels in Lapad enable you to have quick access to the most pleasant beaches (mostly covered in pebbles) in the surrounding areas. All hotels are connected to Dubrovnik by private shuttle bus or public bus. The hotels situated in the south are the most luxurious. Their beaches are small and artificial (concrete floor). From Dubrovnik, shuttle boats sail to the (coarse) sandy beach of the island of Lokrum.
If you seek a more bucolic atmosphere, choose the village of Mlini, 9 miles south of Dubrovnik, or Cavtat, further south, 11 miles from the old city. Located at the tip of the peninsula bearing the same name, it was already a place for holidays under the authority of Ragusa in the 15th century. Today it is a charming little port with great architectural richness. Numerous bus lines commute from the hotels in Cavtat and Mlini to Dubrovnik.
80 miles north of Dubrovnik, the mountainous peninsula of Peljesac and its main city, with beautiful baroque mansions, is also one of those places that stays close to nature and that is pleasantly Mediterranean.

pros

  •  The cultural and architectural heritage
  •  The many festivals in the summer
  •  The large choice among hotels

cons

  •  The beaches are not very large and often artificial

Visit Dubrovnik and its region

  • To see

Dubrovnik is a beautiful city overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Do not hesitate to sneak through the maze of tiny streets of the Old City. Walk around the fortification walls, which reveal beautiful views. Dubrovnik has many churches and museums.

    To do

Take time to visit the Elaphite islands opposite Dubrovnik. Kolocep and Lopud are the closest ones. To the south of Dubrovnik, the small village of Mlini is worth a visit.

    To think about

If you plan a sightseeing tour in Dubrovnik, choose the early morning or late afternoon, or even the early evening. Bring some good shoes with you because the streets are cobbled and sometimes distorted.
  • To avoid

Above all, avoid visiting the fortification walls in the middle of the day, because the heat is stifling in summer time.

    To try

The ham and cheese are excellent. You can also enjoy lots of seafood.

    To bring back

You can bring back some meat, cheese, and also wine (particularly Peljesac wine). The craft is not very significant, but you can still find Pag lace, traditional costumes, weavings and filigree gold or silver jewellery, sometimes decorated with coral.
