Cooking Croatia

 Gastronomy

Cooking is different inland and on the coast. In the regions of Zagreb and Slavonia, the dishes are simple and nourishing and have a central European flavour. You can eat excellent cooked meats, and meat roasts or dishes (pork, beef, duck) with potatoes. In Slavonia, you shouldn't miss the speciality "fish paprika", a river fish cooked with red peppers.
Food on the coast has a Mediterranean influence. You can eat seafood, fish and of course pasta with olive oil and garlic. The Dalmatian speciality is smoked ham. It is eaten in thin slices and served with pieces of cheese and olives. The cheese from the island of Pag, ewe cheese marinated in olive oil, is considered the best cheese in Croatia.
Good restaurants are as expensive as in Europe, especially during summer.
Croatian wines, white and red are famous. The red wines produced along the coast, Teran, Merlot and Cabernet in Istria; Dingac and Postup in Dalmatia, are very good. For white wines, Zlahtina, Posip and Grk are amongst the best.
