Kravner Bucht, Croatia

Kvarner Bay is located between the two peninsulas of Istria and Dalmatia in northern Croatia. It encompasses the Opatija Riviera on Istria's eastern coast, the coast at the foot of the Velebit massif, the mountains of Gorski Kotar, and the islands in the Kvarner Gulf.
The first seaside resorts and spas were created on the Riviera in the 19th century for the Austrian Danubian nobility, who knew how to enjoy the Mediterranean climate and the mild temperatures, especially in winter. Some of the luxury hotels and villas with urbane seaside architecture still bear witness to this period. Opatija, the oldest and most renowned spa resort, with beautiful parks, villas and its 7.5 mile promenade along the beach, and Rijeka, a cultural centre, and university and industrial town, are among the most popular destinations in the area today.
The bay is full of small coastal communities worth visiting, most of which are highly developed in terms of tourism. The many islands, both inhabited and not, also add to the special charm of this region. They are especially known for being holiday and diving destinations thanks to their many small coves, their modern ports able to accommodate yachts, their beaches, and good weather conditions throughout the year. Each of these islands is different and beautiful in its own way.
What is different about holidaying in Kvarner Bay is the unusual range of activities available, including a large choice of well-being offers in the urbane resort towns of Opatija and Rijeka. For something more active, a pleasant bike tour is perfect for discovering a multitude of small coastal communities. Excursions to explore the various coves or islands of the Riviera are two other interesting options. You can try your hand at various water sports or for those seeking quiet and solitude, there's hiking in the lost mountains of Gorski Kotar in the backcountry or the national parks in the Velebit massif.
We visited a number of hotels for you along the coast.

Visit Kravner Bucht

  • To see

Opatija is a lovely holiday destination where, thanks to the Mediterranean climate, you can admire lush vegetation in the many parks and explore the elegant villas and hotels of the late 19th century. It's not for nothing that this city is called the "Nice of the Adriatic". A good tip: visit park 1. Maja with its Angiokna Villa, exotic plants, and the busts of famous personalities.
There are many things to see and do in Rijeka, including notably the old town, Trsat Castle, a place of pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary, the promenade, and the parks.

    To do

Take advantage of the climate and the fresh air by taking long walks on the city's promenades or in the city's parks.
We also recommend horse riding or bike riding excursions in the surrounding hills.
Many cultural events are held in Rijeka.

    To think about

The high season is in summer but winter is also a good time to visit the region; in fact, the nobility of the 19th century were fans of the mild temperatures.
Every year from mid-January to late February, Rijeka plays host to a large carnival with many processions.
Keep in mind: diving trips must be reported to an authority (the tourist information office, police, or port authority).
  • To avoid

Bathing tips: do not swim in the port or outside the marked limits, more than 100 metres from the shore, or without beach shoes, as the ground can be rocky and sea urchins are not rare.
The sea can become deep quickly in some places, so keep a close eye on children.
Hiring a car can be very expensive, so it's better to transport your own here by train (tickets can be purchased from ADAC, among other agencies) or to take advantage of the bus network, which is quite extensive, and explore the rest by bike, available to hire once you arrive.

    To try

The food available along the coast is typically Mediterranean and mostly influenced by Greek and French cuisine. Fish and seafood are part of the daily menu, seasoned with typically Mediterranean herbs and served with fresh vegetables and olive oil. A typical dish from this region is 'File od oslica sa povrcom', a pollock fillet served with vegetables, and 'Brodet', a fish soup from the island of Mljet.
There is also a large choice of wines, marcs, liqueurs, as well as cold-pressed olive oil.

    To bring back

Purchase meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and cheese from the daily markets; the goods are fresher and less expensive than in supermarkets. A reminder of the old Venetian rule under which the region of Kvarner once fell.
Tablecloths and fabrics from Hrvatsko Zagorje and jewellery from Dalmatia are good souvenirs to bring back.
