Krk, Croatia

The island of Krk is located in Kvarner Bay and is the most northern island in the Adriatic. It is accessible by bridge or by ferry from the islands of Cres and Rab. Thanks to its location, this island is an ideal starting point for 'hopping' from one island to the other.
Whereas the northern part of the island is fertile and populated, its southern part is arid, isolated, and covered with forests. Ata height of 569 metres, the highest summit on the island is Mount Obzova in the Kamenjak Massif.
The nature of its landscapes means everyone will be able to find something fun to do in the area. You can spend a pleasant seaside holiday in one of the many coves where you can go scuba diving, sailing and swimming, hike in the heights and vast landscapes, or discover the many small towns on the island. Baska and the urbane resort of Punat, with a beautiful sandy beach directly on the southern Adriatic coast, as well as Nijvice and Malinska in the north, are among the island's most popular tourist destinations. You will find secluded coves and popular resort towns dotted all over the island.
Located in the middle of the south coast, the city of Krk is an option that will enable you to break away from a purely seaside holiday; in the Venetian-style old town, a beautiful promenade, plenty of cafés and an important cultural offering, like the cathedral in the historic centre, await visitors.

Visit Krk

  • To see

The old town of Krk with its historical architectural remains dating back to the ancient Venetian era
    The magnificent Biserujka Cave

    To do

Swimming in Soline cove, located between Klimno, Cizici, Soline, and Meline. The cove is a natural phenomenon; as its depth does not exceed one metre, the water stays warm 6 months of the year.
Boats can be hired on all the beaches. So why not go for a boat excursion?

    To think about

In summer, the city of Krk becomes a lively scene of many events: classical and modern concerts, theatre, ballets, but also plenty of traditional holidays and gourmet events.
  • To avoid

Starting at the end of August, the Bura (icy winds descending from the north-east) and Jugo (a hot wind from the south-east) winds often arrive very unexpectedly and are rather strong. Keep in mind that the Croatians know best when it comes to the sea here: avoid going out to sea on small boats if you are inexperienced. What's more, don't leave any boats in the water overnight unless they are docked in a port!

    To try

Taste the lamb from Krk: the various herbs growing in the meadows on the island give this meat a particular aroma and exceptional quality. It is prepared in a cast iron pot ('Peka') or on the grill.
'Surlice' is a long and thin type of pasta hand-rolled around a knitting needle to get its characteristic shape. Try the traditional recipe with scampi and seafood.
'Presnac' is a cake with a puff pastry base, and made with fresh sheep's milk cheese or white cheese, and raisins. Quite simply delicious!

    To bring back

Vrbnicka Zlahtina is a gold-coloured dry white wine grown in the Vrbnicka countryside on the island. It goes particularly well with the local homemade sheep's cheese, and fish specialities, and the various dishes made with white meat.
Marc is made from grapes and refined with aromatic herbs from Kvarner. Its subtle flavour makes it an excellent gift that should not be forgotten on any list of souvenirs to bring back.
