Split and its region, Croatia

Makarska is an ideal place to visit central Dalmatia and to enjoy the most beautiful and longest pebble beaches in the region. The city, with its numerous streets and small squares, is huddled between the sea and the mountains of the Biokovo, the highest point along the entire coast (5,780 feet). This area concentrates the largest number of lively hotels along the coastline.
It is not far from Makarska that is the boarding point to the islands of Brace, Hvar and Korcula.
For a seaside residence almost cut off from the world, choose the small village of Brela, a dozen miles north of Makarska. Its pebble beach, 5 miles long, is one of the most beautiful in Croatia. It is lined with large hotel complexes hidden behind the pines and cohabiting with small traditional white-stone houses.
10 miles south of Makarska, Igrane is a nice place to choose for a stay; a pleasant small port with long and narrow pebble beaches disfigured here and there by anarchic constructions of concrete houses. From Igrane you can reach Hvar. The island, known for its lavender fields and heady wine, has a sumptuous Venetian-style square that faces the Adriatic Sea, close to the fishing boats and to the cafés which are crowded in the summer.
A little further down, the island of Korcula, located 30 minutes away by ferry from Orebic, is like a concentration of the Mediterranean. On its 100 square miles, coniferous forests, bushes, vineyards, olive, orange and fig trees are gathered. Like Korcula, this is an fishing island, with rich monuments full of history. For a stay in a seaside resort, on any of these islands, you can choose between small hotels on the port (but without beach) and lively hotels, more isolated among vegetation, built on pleasant fitted out pebble beaches.

Visit Split and its region

  • To see

Split is a city that is worth seeing. The buildings of the old city present a mixture of several periods and architectural styles. You should visit the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletien, Marmont street, and the hill of Marjan with its fishing district.

    To do

Visit Split and then Trogir, a small fishing port located a few miles from Split, Kastela and the citadel of Klis.

    To think about

Remember to take along some good shoes as the alleys of the old city of Split are scattered with slippery slabs.
  • To avoid

Avoid visiting Split during the day because in summer the heat is stifling.

    To try

The ham and cheese are excellent. You can also enjoy lots of seafood.

    To bring back

You can bring back some meat, cheese, but also wine (like Peljesac wine) in your suitcase. The craft is not very significant, but you can still find Pag lace, traditional costumes, weavings and filigree gold or silver jewellery, sometimes decorated with coral.
