Zadar and its region, Croatia

Located about 25 miles north of Split, Trogir is one of the museum cities of Croatia. Some of the cobbled streets spanning its old centre, constructed on an island that is on the World Heritage List of UNESCO, date back to the Greco-Roman era. The seaside hotels are built 3 miles north or south of the city, along pebble beaches, as well as in Ciovo, a small "suburban island" of Trogir, linked to it by a bridge.
Every day, hotels provide shuttles that go back and forth to Trogir throughout the evening, enabling tourists to enjoy restaurants hidden in patios and cafes located on the numerous squares of the city.
Going further north to Zadar, hotels are located on the outskirts of the village of Primosten, on the peninsula of the same name, a stone's throw from the port of Vodice, or in Sibenik, where a collection of stairs, small narrow streets and churches is located. The hotels are opposite the narrow pebble beaches shaded by pine trees.
Located further north is Zadar, still preserving its tumultous history, the largest city in northern Dalmatia. Protected from the raging winds by the Kornati archipelago, one of the biggest Mediterranean archipelagos (150 islands), the old city is built on a peninsula and is protected by Venetian fortifications. Do not miss the port, the Roman Forum and the cathedral. The seaside hotels are located near the old city (half an hour's walk away), a close to the public beach, largely popular among its residents. Half sand, half pebbles, it is a pleasant place, but it is often crowded in summer. It is better to leave the city and to stop somewhere along the coast, on different, quieter, pebble beaches.

pros

  •  Sightseeing in the region.

cons

  •  A less rich cultural heritage than in the south of the Dalmatian coast.

Visit Zadar and its region

  • To see

Visit the citadel and its port, Fosa. Also worth seeing is the Five Wells square and the Petrizio palace. Above all, do not forget to visit the marketplace, one of the most picturesque in the Dalmatian region. Olive oil, figs, country ham, cheese... all of these local products are of excellent quality.

    To do

Take a cruise to the Kornati archipelago, opposite Zadar, classified as a natural park. Hike in the Paklenica National Park, midway between the sea and the mountain, the landscapes are varied : Velebit canyons, rivers, caves and gorges. Feel free to request information from the local tourist office of Zadar. If you are staying in the region of Sibenik, excursions are organized to the national park of Krka to admire its impressive waterfalls, bearing the same name.

    To think about

Remember to take along some good shoes and something to drink to keep you hydrated.
  • To avoid

Avoid visiting Zadar during the day in summer.

    To try

The ham and cheese are excellent. You can also enjoy lots of seafood.

    To bring back

You can bring back some meat, cheese, but also wine (like Peljesac wine) in your suitcase. The craft is not very significant, but you can still find Pag lace, traditional costumes, weavings and filigree gold or silver jewellery, sometimes decorated with coral.
