 Gastronomy

Cyprus' cuisine is similar to that of continental Greece. Make sure to try out Greek coffee, served with its dregs, or ouzo, a spirit flavoured with aniseed (served straight or with water). When it is very hot, ask for mezze (a mixture of first courses served on small separate plates). Portions are generally quite generous, and you can have a substantial meal with this assortment of tarama, sesame salad, taboulé and halloumi (Cypriot cheese). Despite the Greek-Turkish conflict, their cuisine is very similar. Both in the north and in the south you will find kebabs of goat or lamb served with vegetables. Fish tends to be quite expensive and is not generally available outside of coastal regions. Fried squid, often served with a hint of fresh lemon, is a delicious option... Deserts are usually made with honey or almonds, and are extremely sweet. Beware of "tourist trap" restaurants, which try to compensate for a very average cuisine with an unauthentic folklore.
