The castle of Kolossi The Commandery of the Knights of Kolossi is the best mark left by the order of the Hospital in Cyprus. Carlos Rodrigues
Some 9 miles to the west of Limassol, on the southern coast of the island, the castle of the Order of the Templars of Kolossi is a sight you shouldn't miss. Chased out of Jerusalem during the Third Crusade, the Knights of the Order of Hospitallers retreated to Cyprus in 1291 and chose Kolossi as their main base in the eastern Mediterranean. However, the castle as it is now, with its three levels, dates from 1454. It was rebuilt in the 15th century after having been destroyed by the Genoese and the Mamelouks. The castle is open for visits, which are free of charge.
