The Saint Lazarus church in the centre of Larnaca dates from the end of the 9th century. After his resurrection, Lazarus, who was ordained bishop by Saint Barbabé, went to Cyprus, where he had his ministry. During the Frankish period, the church became transformed into a mosque by the Turks, and then became a church again at the end of the 16th century. In 1970, a crypt was discovered under the altar during restoration works containing a sarcophagus that is said to be that of Lazarus.
