8th century: start of the Viking Age.
826-865: French monk Angsar introduces Christianity into Denmark.
1443: Copenhagen is made capital of the Kalmar Union, made of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
1660: Frederick III installs the monarchy.
1788: emancipation of the peasants that gain the right to property.
1814: end of the Anglo-Danish war.
1849: Denmark becomes a constitutional monarchy.
1860-1865: war against Prussia and Austria, and loss of the province of Schleswig-Holstein.
1940: German occupation.
1944: the province of Iceland is declared independent.
1953: the new constitution allows women to occupy the throne.
1973: Denmark becomes member of the European Union.
1992: After a referendum the Danish population says ?no' the Maastrich treaty.
1993: The Social-Democrats return to power, and the ?yes' wins.
1996: Copenhagen is Cultural Capital of Europe.
2000: Ministerial changes. Rise of the far-right wing. Denmark refuses to enter the Euro zone.
2002: Law on immigration. Suppression of the refugee status.
8th February 2005: Anders Fogh Rasmusen's Liberal Conservative party wins the elections (95 seats out of 179).
