The town of Portsmouth, which runs the length of the banks of Prince Rupert Bay, was nearly the capital of the island. From a supply port for Spanish ships, to a Pirate hide out in the 16th Century, Portsmouth quickly became an important port under English authority. The town has two remarkable sites; the Cabrit National Park in the north, which is home to Fort Shiley and covered in jungle, and the Indian River in the south, which is a luxurious shallow blue water river. Portsmouth is also a good underwater diving spot.
