20 miles away from the capital and 7 miles from Las Americas International Airport, the small town of Boca Chica was built at the beginning of the 20th century and it is worth a detour for its liveliness and its beach. The latter, called Playa Buyacana consists of an immense fine sand strip shaded by coconut and wide almond trees. A coral barrier protects the lagoon. As a large part of the beach is public, you are never short of activities and water sports. Especially at the weekend, when the Dominicans from Santo Domingo (who don't have a beach) meet up! Likewise, the city is reputed for its parties and night life. The small, low colourful houses, standing against one another, are as lively on the inside as they are on the outside, giving the town a particular charm. Music permeates every part of this area. Along the beach, restaurants stand one after the other. However, beware of pickpockets and avoid showing off jewellery.
