La Romana, Dominican Republic

Not far from Bayahibe, south-east of the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean coast, the province of La Romana is located 35 miles from Juan Dolio and 68 miles from Santo Domingo. A village of the same name is within an hour's drive to the east of the large seaside resort of Punta Cana. In the past, the sugar cane industry has driven the economy in the region, which can be found in its countryside through the fields, with citrus fruits and cattle farming. Today, the area of Casa de Campo, an impressive hotel complex, consists of dozens of luxury villas, one of the major attractions of the region.
The jet-setters who visit can be found in this resort, built by a consortium of Cubans in Miami. The site of Altos de Chavon, an astonishing reconstruction of a medieval village in the Mediterranean, represents another major attraction of the region. It overlooks a river which goes by the same name, rio Chavon, sailable all the way up to the waterfalls and landscape where "Apocalypse Now" was shot. Do not forget the small island of Catalina. Its beaches of white sand, just like paradise, are accessible by boat.

The limited range of excursions includes the site of Altos de Chavon, a unusual place that houses a school of art and a rich pre-Columbian archaeological museum, are worth a visit.

Visit La Romana

  • To see

The charming fishing village of Bayahibe, 15 miles from La Romana (half an hour by taxi), is worth a visit. Also, do not miss the colonial zone of Santo Domingo and its monuments. It takes an hour and a half by taxi (when the traffic runs smoothly) to reach the capital.

    To do

Each Friday, the Haitian market blocks the whole of the main street at the exit of the city during the day. You can find all kinds of cheap products including fripperies and shoes. Remember that some hotels offer excursions by boat to Catalina Island.

    To think about

A suitcase for the summer: light clothing cotton, open shoes, shorts, shirts, T-shirts, without forgetting the bathing suit, as well as warm clothes and walking shoes for getaways in the mountains. A lightweight raincoat is useful during the rainy season (from May to July).
  • To avoid

For a trip to the capital Santo Domingo, opt taxis rather than buses, which are too slow and take more than three hours and trips offered by the hotels. You will find that you benefit from the tourist information given by the driver.

    To try

Rich and spicy, Dominican cuisine is the result of Creole, European and African influences. Starch foods (rice, sweet potatoes and plantain), fish and shell fish as well as tropical fruits are the key foods. The stews (mondogo, sancocho) are common, with goat meat or fish cooked in coconut milk being prime examples.

    To bring back

Jewellery made from amber (brown solidified resin), larimar (blue stone), leather items, baskets, naive paintings, a legacy of Indian Taïnos, CDs of merengue and bachata, cigars, liquid vanilla, jam, rum and coffee are the main souvenirs that you can bring home. They can be found everywhere on beaches and especially in local markets.
