Obelisk at La Romana This one is certainly more colourful than the one that stands on Paris' Place de la Concorde! © OT Republique Dominicaine
The main attraction in La Romana is Casa de Campo, an impressive hotel complex which consists of dozens of luxury villas and of the Altos de Chavon site, the reconstruction of a Mediterranean medieval village. This is a very unusual place, which also houses an art school and a rich pre-Columbian archaeological museum. It overlooks a river which goes by the same name, rio Chavon, navigable by boat all the way up to the waterfalls and landscape where 'Apocalypse Now' was shot. The excursion to Casa de Campo can depart from Punta Cana, the large sea resort located a little over an hour's drive east of the village.
