Merengue has pride of place when it comes to music. This type of music of uncertain origin (African, Cuban, Creole) is part of the national heritage. Not one day goes by without listening to some tunes of this easy-listening and popular music based on three main instruments: drums, accordions and guiras (a Dominican instrument). Salsa and bachata dancing (bachata is derived from merengue, but slower and more romantic) is also part of the Dominican musical culture.
