On the Amber Coast, near Rio San Juan, one of the most beautiful beaches of the country and the longest on the north coast certainly lives up to its name. Lined with coconut trees, the Playa Grande unfolds as a wide strip of golden sand over several miles, where it is possible to find space on your own. It used to be the Dominicans' favourite weekend destination before it became surrounded by large hotel complexes, but it is accessible to visitors, who come a long way to enjoy its transparent water. Restaurants, bars and musicians make the central part lively. Go around mid-afternoon time for a little peace and quiet. Beware of currents and large swells in winter.
