Puerto Plata, on the Amber Coast, is adorably quaint, with its Victorian style wooden houses, also known as Gingerbread. The fort of San Felipe, built in the 16th century to defend the coast from attacks from the sea is worth a visit. If you would like to admire the city as a whole, take the cable car to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres and savour the view from there.
