Santo Domingo, the capital city, has preserved the tokens of its colonial history so well that the historic quarter of the city was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1990. The tour of the colonial area starts in Calle de las Damas, the oldest cobbled street boasting superb colonial houses and the fortress of Ozama. At the end of the street, you can see Columbus's house, then Hispanidad square where Alcazar de Colon stands, a magnificent palace transformed into a museum overlooking the city harbour. Santa Maria La Menor's cathedral, opposite Columbus Park, in a gothic-plateresque style, was the first cathedral built in America. The cultural district brings together several museums (anthropology museum, modern art museum) and the national theatre. The popular district, around Mella Street, offers a cheerful and musical atmosphere, just like the rest of the country.
