Rarely translated, few Dominican literature novels make their way across the Atlantic. The writers that cannot be ignored are Jose Joaquin Perez and Salome Urena de Henriquez, writers of the end of the 19th century. They are the founders of the Dominican Republic's national literature. The author of 'Enriquillo', Manuel Jesus Galvan must also be mentioned. Dominican cinemas are not crowded, unless an American film is showing. The Dominican Republic is no match for its neighbor, the intellectual Cuba.
