The Dominicans have a ?technicolour' approach to life, to say the least and the local houses are often painted in bright colours. This gives them luminosity and certain vividness in the sunshine which may be why Santo Domingo is a Unesco World Heritage site. Tokens of the colonial era are still visible all over the Dominican Republic. Capital of rum and tobacco, Santiago is itself reputed for its intense and thrilling night life.
