Aswan

Aswan Aswan Why not relax on the terrace at the Old Cataract hotel and admire the beautiful sunset. A.Lorgnier ©

A few hours in Aswan is where you'll find serenity. There is no doubt that the combined effect of feluccas, silently gliding on the Nile, all white sails , and the surrounding desert, surprisingly appeasing. A week's holiday at the gates of Antique Nubia gives you the opportunity to see the unfinished Obelisk (138 feet high) and the nearby Philae temple. On the west shore of the city, camel ride to the old monastery of St. Simeon (9th century) and, within walking distance, the tombs of the princes on the Elephantine Island (Pharaoh era). Don't forget, on the other shore, to visit the Nubian museum and its beautiful gardens, and to stroll to the souk where Anubis figurines are on sale with African masks that come from the neighbouring country of Sudan. Unmissable: the sunset from the terrace of the majestic Old Cataract hotel, perched on top of a pink granite rock facing the Nile.
