The first animal that comes to mind when one thinks of the Egyptian desert is the camel which is actually justified as the Egyptians use them a lot for transportation. Nonetheless, other species live in these desert lands. Amongst them, cheetahs, sand cats, fennec foxes and Nubian ibexes. The desert was once home to a great variety of mammals such as the hyena, the cheetah, the oryx and even lions (at the time of the Pharaohs). Some species have totally disappeared, others are slowly disappearing due to hunting practices.
