Saint Catherine's Monastery in Egypt This monastery was built at the foot of Mount Sinai. Martin Siepmann/ age fotostock
At the foot of Mount Sinaï, south of the Sinaï peninsula, the Greek monastery of Saint Catherine (6th century) opens the gates of its sumptuous basilica and library to visitors. It is the world's most complete library, just after the Vatican's, when you take into account the value and number of manuscripts. You can also visit the Byzantine chapel, whose altar was said to have been built on the roots of the Burning Bush.
